Do you like your romances more Gothic than not?
Jude Knight’s latest release is The Darkness Within, part of her Lion’s Zoo series.
Here’s the description:
Max has killed for a living, first as a sniper in the war against Napoleon, and later as an assassin of those whose power allowed them to commit evil without fear of punishment.
The dead burden of his soul spurs him to retire, and when a search for a missing comrade takes him into a religious community that calls itself Heaven, he feels as if he has found a home.
But Max soon discovers a darkness within the group, and when the woman he’s come to love is in awful danger he must act.
To save her, he must lose her, for when he draws on his hard-won skills as a sniper and assassin, she will recoil from the darkness of his soul.
Note: This book is largely set within a cult, so is not your typical Regency

I loved this story!
From that first line “Max has killed for a living” you know this Regency romance will be a little darker than most. Jude Knight has a deft hand with dark subjects and characters and you have them all here: drugs, exploitative sex, (not on the page though), enslavement to the community and its leader, and the tyrannical mind control that squelches free thought, opposing opinions, and yes, true love between one man and one woman.
But this is romance, and true love does win out through the actions of the damaged but brave hero, Max, who despite the abuse of his past, knows right from wrong and is determined to bring about an end to the suffering. It’s a great story and well told.
