As I promised last week, today’s blog features another book in the Tragic Characters in Classic Lit Series, this one perfect for the many fans of Jane Austen. In The Colonel’s Spinster, Author Audrey Harrison tells the story of Mr. Darcy’s cousin, Colonel Fitwilliam.
Here’s Audrey:
As an author of Regency Romances, it’s been daunting and enjoyable to write this book and include some of the finest literary characters created.
I love Pride and Prejudice and have always wanted Colonel Fitzwilliam to find happiness, so being part of the ‘Love After All’ Tragic Heroes in Classic Literature group was my opportunity to provide that.
He had a flirtation with Elizabeth but told her that he needed to marry for money. It also struck me when Darcy seems to be suggesting on her next visit to Kent she would be staying at Rosings. Elizabeth presumes he means through a connection with Colonel Fitzwilliam and wait for it ― she’s disappointed! Proving (in my eyes anyway) that she wasn’t attracted to Colonel Fitzwilliam. Even then, Elizabeth was drawn to Darcy.
Jane Austen describes Fitzwilliam as not handsome, but with a good personality. Damned by faint praise! I thought that without money and good looks, he wouldn’t find marriage within London society. Mill owners were extremely rich and I like to pair up opposites, so it was inevitable that Fitzwilliam was going to marry outside of his social circle.
I hope readers enjoy my take on this lovely man.
The Colonel’s Spinster
He needs a rich wife. A pity that he’s falling for the wrong woman… She’s looking to find out more about her past. She wasn’t expecting to find her future…..
Colonel Fitzwilliam is a second son, often overshadowed by his titled, older brother and his cousin, Mr Darcy. Returning from Waterloo he knows it is time to find a wife with a healthy dowry, but he longs for a love match. Unfortunately for Fitzwilliam, love doesn’t put food on the table.
Miss Prudence Bamber has never known her mother’s family. A woman with her own mind and full life, she indulges her father’s wish to visit her long-lost relations. Mr Bamber hopes his daughter will find a husband; she wishes nothing more than to find out more about her mother’s history. It turns out to be a trip she won’t forget in a hurry.
Two people looking for love, but challenged by pride, secrets and prejudice. Will they be able to overcome the odds to find their own happy ever after? Or, are they destined to remain separated by the constraints of society? Complex characters brought together in this gripping Regency Romance.
The Colonel’s Spinster is a Regency romance and Pride and Prejudice variation (JAFF), topped with a generous dose of humour, action, and tears. If you like simmering chemistry, fast-paced adventures, and strong characters, then you’ll love Audrey Harrison’s Regency tale.

About the author:
I have had the fortune to live a dream. I’ve always wanted to write, but life got in the way as it so often does until a few years ago. Then a change in circumstance enabled me to do what I loved: sit down to write. Now writing has taken over my life, holidays being based around research, so much so that no matter where we go, my long-suffering husband says, ‘And what connection to the Regency period has this building/town/garden got?’
That dream became a little more surreal when in 2018, I became an Amazon StorytellerUK Finalist with Lord Livesey’s Bluestocking. A Regency Romance in the top five of an all-genre competition! It was a truly wonderful experience, I didn’t expect to win, but I had a ball at the awards ceremony.
I do appreciate it when readers get in touch, especially if they love the characters as much as I do. Those first few weeks after release is a trying time; I desperately want everyone to love my characters that take months and months of work to bring to life.
If you enjoy the books please would you take the time to write a review on Amazon? Reviews are vital for an author who is just starting out, although I admit to bad ones being crushing. Selfishly I want readers to love my stories!
