He rose suddenly and took her hands, too close, he knew, for her comfort. The fragrance of sugar lingered on her breath, and he longed to taste her. She tried to step back, but he moved his hands to her shoulders and edged closer. “You were spying on me, Miss Harris? I might ask why you were there.”

“Why I was there? Miss Townsend and I are acquainted. She has on occasion sent me a child in need.”

Her breath came in great gulps, and his own heart was racing with a mad desire he hadn’t felt in some time. Yes, yes, they could dispense with the other dance and try something completely different.

“And she has taken in a poor woman like Trish for you?”

Her lips formed a prim line he longed to dislodge with a proper kiss.

“Yes. Why were you there?” There was a challenge in her gaze, meant to provoke him. And it did.

He slid his hands to her back. “I went to that house for information, not for the company. What a happy surprise that I met an interesting woman.”

Her chin lifted. Her gaze pinned him. Her lips parted. “You—” He stopped the words with a press of his lips to hers, gentling the kiss at the sound of the soft sigh that formed from what undoubtedly had started as a scold.

The hoyden he’d met years earlier was still as wild as her Irish roots.

And just as unlucky, and still an Irish traitor’s sister. But her beauty, her charm, and her courage can’t be ignored, no matter his spy lord father’s objections. When danger strikes, he’ll risk scandal, the ton’s disapproval, his father’s ire…and his own heart.

The Rogue’s Last Scandal

Like any good rogue, he was after a lady.

Saving a young heiress from wedding a scoundrel might just ease Charley Everly’s boredom with his current assignment. He’s been looking for a lady: beautiful, rich, Spanish, and the key to a traitor.

Could Grace Kingsley be the one?

Falling—literally—into the arms of the ton’s most outrageous rogue seems a risky path of escape, but Maria Graciela Kingsley y Romero has no other choice. Only the great Earl of Shaldon can help her, and he is not to be found.

So his son will have to do.

Convincing the Countess

A penniless widowed countess with trade in her blood descends upon the country manor of her sons’ negligent guardian, intent on confronting him about her boys’ futures. Instead, she finds his younger brother, a business-minded aristocrat with a penchant for widows and a distaste for emotional entanglements. A man who once witnessed her greatest humiliation. A man offering enticing distractions that threaten to derail all her plans.

Called home at Christmas to bring his older brother to heel and sort out the family finances, a baron’s younger brother wishes nothing more than to finish the task and return to his railway project. But when he finds his mother entertaining a fetching widow he met many years earlier as the unfortunate bride of a ne’er-do-well earl, temptation steers him along a different track, one that may derail all his plans.

Can he convince the reluctant countess to set a course for her future that includes him?

Excerpt:

In this excerpt from Convincing the Countess, the hero questions the heroine about her plans to chaperone a young heiress all the while plotting a kiss—since she’s seated under a sprig of mistletoe!

“I intend for her to have every opportunity to meet worthy young men.”

“Worthy?”

She nodded.

“And young?” He scoffed. “I’m not sure you’ll find those two qualities combined in the gentlemen of the ton.” He smiled. “Present company excluded.”

Color rose in her cheeks and her lips moved up in an answering smile that didn’t reach her lovely eyes. “Perhaps. In any case, I’ve a good eye for fortune hunters of any age.”

“Her dowry will certainly draw interest.” He recalled his brother’s belief that Mother was matchmaking, and this lady’s sharp gaze at dinner when his arm brushed Miss Cartwright’s. “Do you think I’m a danger to her?” He drawled the question like one of the rakes who frequented White’s.

“I don’t know you well enough to say. However, you are engaged in a business endeavor, and business endeavors always require capital. You are undoubtedly looking for more funds to invest.”

“Or, the project may be fully vested.”

The gray gaze pinned him, intelligent and challenging, stirring him. This lady was not just a beautiful widow. She might be a sharp businesswoman, if she was ever allowed to engage in trade.

“So, you and your partners foresee no problems? No cost overruns? No unexpected expenses?”

There were always unforeseen matters arising. The solving of them was part of the fun. Crossing swords with this lady was fun as well.

One slim finger tapped the arm of her chair. “Building a railway is not like commissioning a shipload of goods, where a gentleman, on the expectation of great profits, might sink a fixed amount, perhaps all of his wealth and then some, and learn it has been lost to the Barbary pirates with every hand, every bottle, and every crate.” The tapping accelerated. The steady gaze darkened. “In such a case, one loses in one fell swoop. For example, as one might have, if one invested in the Matilda Rose.”

The Matilda Rose? Why bring that up? The ship had been lost years ago. Plenty of fellows had lost money, but not him. On his father’s advice, he’d withdrawn from the risky investment, and so had his brother Fitz.

He shoved down a nagging unease, gave into annoyance, and forced a laugh. “My dear Lady Glanford. It’s rare to meet a woman so well versed in business.” He leaned forward in his chair and lowered his voice. “Perhaps I’ll be a danger to you. Do you know, you are seated under the mistletoe?”

Her finger stilled. She stood and extended her hand.

No rings, no bracelets, no other adornments. He bent over white fingers and brought them firmly against his lips.

Her shiver shook him down to the soles of his boots.

“There.” Under the steady gray gaze, the pulse in her neck ticked. “I shall be more careful in the future, Mr. Lovelace.”

Thrilled to finally have a permanent home, a Squire’s daughter won’t let a supernatural creature scare her away. While hunting the ghost she doesn’t believe in, she stumbles upon a mysterious flesh and blood man who might be the key to all of her problems.

When the new Squire moves into Fenwick Manor, an ex-army officer secretly searching the sprawling medieval wreck devises a plan: First, the manor’s legendary ghost will chase servants away. Then, he’ll convince the new residents to leave.

But the Squire’s spirited daughter soon has him wondering if he might have found a perfect comrade in arms to help battle old enemies and find the proof that will clear his family name.

Excerpt:

An arm snaked around her shoulder.

“Miss Fenwick, how well you have arranged this.”

An unpleasant male musk filled her senses, and all of her muscles tightened.

Papa was not here, nor Lord Farnsworth. But…please God…rescue was not so far away.

“Do remove your hand, Mr. Greggson.” She shouted the words at the doorway that led to the servant’s passage.

“I think not.”

He whipped her around and bent his head toward her. She dodged away, and his hands framed her head, turning her to him.

“Stop this now,” she shouted, arching away from his fishy breath.

Her backside hit the table. She brought her knee up sharply and Greggson flew away, crashing into the wall.

She clutched a chair back, struggling for breath. What had just happened? And why? And how…a tall figure advanced on her. Her pulse spiked, and then eased. She couldn’t make out a face, but the scent was her Papa’s soap.

It was Freddy. Trembling, she flung herself at him and fell into a tight embrace.

“Are you all right?”

Nearby, Greggson moaned, and in the corridor footsteps clattered. Freddy was wise to whisper. Greggson wasn’t unconscious.

She snuggled against his shoulder, relishing a warmth no man had ever offered her. Freddy had rescued her. He’d risked much—Greggson was a dangerous man.

Murmurs in the corridor grew closer, and Greggson groaned more loudly. She untangled herself and stepped back. “Go. Papa’s coming, and Greggson is coming to.”

Greggson stirred, and Freddy stepped toward him.

She grabbed his arm and tugged him along toward the servant’s door.

“Go,” she whispered.

“No. Your father—”

“Will protect me. Us.”

His dark gaze melted her, heat uncoiling deep within her. Freddy had honor, and courage, and strength. He’d saved her, and now she must save him.

“Us?” The word whispered through her, their lips almost touching. “Tilly—”

Cloth rustled as Greggson stirred.

“No.” She shook her head. “Here.” She handed Freddy the single taper she’d been carrying. His own brace of candles rested on the sideboard near the servant’s passage. He was lucky Greggson hadn’t spotted him.

Gloved fingers cradled her cheek, spiking more warmth.

“I’ll be right here, on the other side.”

She nodded and pulled the door closed on Freddy’s boot. Papa’s footsteps moved closer, but Greggson’s arms and legs were moving as well.

One serving tray remained, laden with cutlery. She grabbed a sharp knife just as the corridor door opened, admitting her father and Lord Farnsworth.

Papa froze, the lamp he held lighting his features, his gaze landing upon the knife in her hand. “Tilly?”

She let out a long breath and followed his line of sight to her trembling hand.

Freddy peered through the slit in the door opening, anger still quaking inside him. How dare Greggson touch the lass?

It wouldn’t happen again. He’d see to it, just as soon as he had a moment alone with the maw-worm.

“Tilly,” Sir Newton said again, and there was astonishment in the older man’s voice. “Whatever has happened, my dear?”

The voice grew louder as the Squire approached.

“What is going on here, Greggson?” Sir Newton asked sharply.

“Mr. Greggson surely stumbled,” Tilly said. “In the dark. We didn’t know you’d left and when we returned, you’d put out all the lights on the table except those.”

“That’s quite a stumble.” Farnsworth must have drawn nearer, as his voice carried more clearly. “I’ll fetch you a brandy, Greggson, though perhaps you had more than enough wine to have hit the wall so handily.”

“Thank you,” Greggson said. “Actually, I fear I must have a private word with you, Sir Newton.”

“A private word? Tilly, where is the footman?”

Freddy held his breath, waiting for her reply.

“I sent him to alert the stables. Mr. Greggson wanted to leave before the rain worsens and I thought perhaps you would wish to return safely home also, Lord Farnsworth.”

His heart lifted. She was not just lovely, but smart to boot and she could work her away around the truth without telling an outright lie.

“I fear I must talk to you tonight, sir,” Greggson said, clearing his throat.

The hair on Freddy’s neck rose as his fists clenched.

“You see,” Greggson said, “Miss Fenwick and I—”

“Saw the ghost,” Tilly blurted out. She reached for her father’s hand tugging him towards her.

“The ghost, my dear?”

“Yes, Papa. I hesitated to say it. It was the most astonishing thing.”

Tilly Fenwick and her father, The Squire, have inherited Fenwick Manor. It’s a beautiful estate but not without its quirks, including a ghost. The servants run off and Tilly is left wondering what to do when she meets a mysterious man named Freddy in the woods. She offers him a job but he declines. It’s not until her father meets Freddy that things start to get interesting. Is the “ghost” driving people away? There’s a rumor of treasure at Fenwick Manor and Tilly wonders if Freddy is after the treasure. When the truth is revealed as well as Freddy’s feelings for her, she’s conflicted. Does Freddy love her, even with her plain looks, or is he speaking platitudes to gain control of Fenwick Manor and its treasure?

This is my first hearing about the Common Elements Romance Project, and it intrigued me. Five common elements connect Haunting Miss Fenwick with the other books. Brilliant!

Haunting Miss Fenwick is a delightful romance with dashes of the supernatural and intrigue thrown in. Both Tilly and Freddy are intelligent people which I thoroughly enjoyed. The attraction between Tilly and Freddy is immediate but their romance blooms slowly. Tilly’s dog is a friendly big dog whose instincts are 100% accurate. The mystery behind the “ghost” kept me turning the pages. I couldn’t stop reading and read it in two sessions. Haunting Miss Fenwick is a character-driven story with a lot going on. Historically accurate but that is not surprising as Alina K. Field is a stickler for research.

If you’re looking for a sweet romance with suspenseful elements, pick up Haunting Miss Fenwick today. Highly recommend!

Favorite Character/Quote: Tilly. I love a spirited heroine, especially in the Regency era. She speaks her mind and more times than not, gets her into trouble. She’s very protective of those she loves and thinks nothing of putting her own life in danger. Independent, high-spirited and loves with her whole being… everything you want in a heroine.

Excerpt:

From The Duke She Despised, by Alina K. Field

A faint pounding started up. Andrew rubbed at his temple. “Another one of the bloody banging shutters that kept me up all night, do you suppose? Or might that be one of the legendary ghosts?”

George raised an eyebrow. “Or might it be someone at the door?”

Andrew tilted his head to listen, bile rising in him. “I locked Haskill out not a quarter of an hour ago and barred the door. Did the bastard forget something?” He looked around for his castoff neck cloth.

Never mind. If this was Haskill at the door, he wouldn’t risk bloodying the thing when he kicked the man out on his arse again.

Cold air overwhelmed him in the hall, the sort of damp chill oozed by a medieval pile left unheated for years. He wished for his overcoat, flung over a chair in the study, since neither he nor George had brought so much as a groom.

They’d tended their horses themselves as well, and washed in the ice-cold buckets they’d had to carry up. George, though, had managed a shave and fresh linens, the pompous ass.

George wasn’t the one who’d been plunged into despair. George hadn’t just been encumbered with a crumbling castle and a bankrupt estate. George hadn’t just learned he’d lost his only brother months and months earlier to a fever.

Andrew rubbed at his chin. No neckcloth and two days-worth of beard—this had better not be a social caller.

He unbarred the door and yanked the heavy wood open.

In the half-light a woman stood, ramrod straight despite her shivering, swathed in dark wool.

“I beg your pardon,” she said. “I knocked at the servant’s door but no one answered.”

By God, she was an Englishwoman, and she didn’t speak like a servant.

Her wrap slipped, and he peered closer, his interest stirring. She was youngish, and from what he could see, attractive.

“I’m the new housekeeper.”

A blur of dark fur shot through the door and they both jumped.

“I believe that was a cat.” She peered around him.

“I’ve never seen it before.” The bloody thing scurried off toward the bowels of the Castle and out of sight.

“May I come in?” She cleared her throat. “No one is answering the servants’ door.”

A sharp gust of wind blasted him. He apologized, stepping back, watching her enter.

The heavy wrap outlined a shapely woman. She put him in mind of Mrs. Ramsey, Old Horace’s faithful housekeeper for so many years. ’Twas whispered that she had been more than a servant, and perhaps it was true given the old man’s sharp decline after her death.

The new housekeeper placed a valise and a basket on the black and white tile.

“Are these all your belongings, or have you left a driver out in the snow?”

“I walked and—”

“Walked? In this weather?” Either she was of hardy stock, or he’d soon have to call the apothecary to treat her.

“Yes,” she said. “I’ve a trunk at the inn, to be brought up when the weather eases.”

He scoffed. “Next spring, then, perhaps.”

She sent him an arch look and slipped the shawl back from her head, taking a bonnet with it and revealing errant dark locks that curled about her cheeks and dangled on her shoulder.

Her attention traveled over the dark paneling and up to the painted cornice with its scenes of medieval knights and their ladies. She gasped. “It’s astonishing. Like…like a fairy tale castle.”

A fairy tale castle? Was she mad?

The scenes might have once fascinated his childish heart, but he’d outgrown such nonsense.

She leveled a gaze at him. “What is your name, young man?”

His name? He blinked. Young man? He was likely older than her.

A chuckle bubbled up, the first moment of lightness he’d experienced in days. She thought he was a servant. A servant in a fairy tale castle.

Well, well. How would a lackey behave toward an arriving housekeeper?

“Never mind.” She reached for her basket. “Just show me the way to the servant’s—”

He snatched up the hamper. The aroma of stewed meat escaped from under the heavy cloth, making his mouth water. “You must first be introduced. Come along. The duke conducts business in the study.”

Her hand went to her disheveled hair. “I must—”

“You are fine as you are.” As he nudged her along, a beam of light caught her features.

His prickle of interest bloomed into full-fledged awareness. Full lips, porcelain skin, and a determined little chin—his new housekeeper was more than fine, and she spoke like a Mayfair matron. A youngish one. The urge to become better acquainted overwhelmed him.

Except, he was a duke now. Blast it. Why did Evan have to die and leave him this burden?

He reached up to tug his neckcloth and found it missing. Her frown showed she’d noticed, and that made him smile again.

“No one expected a bonny housekeeper.”

Dark eyes glinted at his impertinence.

So much for the letter he’d sent to cancel her hiring. He was keeping her, at least through Hogmanay. “I fear we are all at sixes and sevens here,” he said.

She pursed her lips. “I see that. You’ve lost your neckcloth, your razor, and your comb.”

He squashed another grin. “I’ll just carry this basket along out of the way of the resident mice.”

Those full lips pinched tighter, raising his spirits even higher. She thought he was the duke’s naughty retainer. Well, he could be. He wouldn’t need her around for much longer than a few weeks, and as a footman…no, not a footman. He could play the new factor. A factor could spar with her the way a duke—or a footman, for that matter—never could. He’d do her no harm.

Regarding THE DUKE SHE DESPISED

Wow! I really loved this book. This was my first time to read a story by Field and I am so glad to have discovered her. Her characters are well rounded and believable. The story moves at a good pace. There was some humor sprinkled here and there. I loved the theme of redemption. I look forward to more by this author.

N.N. Light on N.N. Light's Book Heaven wrote:

FIVE STARS!

If you’re like me and love Regency romances set during the holidays, you’re going to love this anthology. Thirteen brand-new romances by some of today’s bestselling and award-winning Regency authors. I haven’t read them all yet but I can’t wait to read them. I had the chance to read The Duke She Despised by Alina K. Field this week and my review is for that book.

Filomena Grant blames the now Duke of Kinmarty for her lot in life. His sweeping statements ruined her chances for a good match ten years ago. But Filomena’s cousin and her children are returning from India and Filomena knows the time to make amends with the only family she’s ever known is nigh. She secures a position at the dreaded Duke’s estate as a housekeeper. Hard work has never been a problem for her but when she lays eyes on the Duke’s factor, all she can think about is being swept up in his embrace. What she doesn’t realize is the very same duke she despises is the same man she swoons over. When the truth is revealed, can Filomena forgive the duke, or will he forever be the Duke She Despised?

Hidden identities, family obligations, misunderstandings abound in this story but there’s also love. Romantic love, specifically enemies to lovers romance, is the main trope yet Alina K. Field throws in a few curveballs to make it interesting. My heart went out to both Andrew (dreaded duke) and Filomena several times while reading. Both characters have dealt with huge losses while wasting time stewing over past hurts. Christmastide is a time for healing and this romance oozes forgiveness.

Why is this a five-star book? From the first page, I couldn’t stop reading. I connected with the characters right away. The romance is slow-burning and there’s a fair amount of will they or won’t they intrigue. I was emotionally invested in the story so much; I would try to coax the characters by speaking aloud. The abundant historical details swept me away to another time and place. The ending was unexpected but made my romantic heart soar.

If you love Regency Romance, especially holiday-themed, this anthology is for you. So many great stories by some of my favorite authors. Highly recommend!

My Rating: 5 stars

She drew a fingertip along the crease of the canvas where it had been tightened against the wooden stretchers, marveling that such a fragile thing should hold up so well. Along one edge, dark marks, ink perhaps, had bled through from the underside. Lifting the edge and peering closer, she could make out a series of numbers.

Strange.

The work was much smaller than the Caravaggio she’d seen. It was about the size of the small landscape that hung in the bedroom she shared with Lady Perry. She spread her hands wide, taking its measure.

Rolled up, it would fit nicely in the gold-painted rolling pin.

“Where is my daughter?”

Alarm pounded through her. She dropped her hands to her side and froze, eyes shut tight against the flare of panic.

Bloody Shaldon tracked her everywhere.

Warmth touched her waist like a bolt from on high, sending hot desire wriggling inside her. Since his turn with the laudanum, Shaldon wouldn’t stop touching her.

When this was over, she would think seriously about taking a lover, if she could find some gentleman as appealing as Shaldon who would have her, as old and poor as she was.

She glanced over her shoulder, seeing only his beard-shadowed jaw. “I couldn’t resist the temptation.” Her voice shook and she eased in a breath. “I’ve never seen a real masterpiece.”

“It is remarkable, I suppose.”

Unlike many of his peers, Shaldon didn’t collect art. Shaldon House boasted only family portraits and a few paintings of favorite horses and landscapes. His interest lay in collecting and squashing his enemies.

Her heart pounded wildly. If all went right, she would soon be in that number.

“Have you seen Lady Perry, my dear?”

His breath tickled her ear, and the hand at the back of her waist slid a bit further around, bending her to him.

She lifted his hand away and turned to face him.

Dark eyes sparkled in the candlelight, completely unreadable. She rooted her feet resisting the urge to step away, risking the nearness. She could see the pulse in his temple and—

“You are bleeding, Shaldon.”

A bead of blood sparkled and threatened to roll down his cheek. His neckcloth was loose and stained red where he must have mopped at his wound. Under the neckcloth, his shirt flapped, more blood coloring the white linen there.

She dug in her pocket for her handkerchief and pressed it to his head. His hand wrapped hers and his gaze softened, setting her insides melting again.

When this was over, she was definitely seeking a lover. Not Shaldon, of course. Not him. She must not fall any further into his enticements.

She drew her hand away and studied the wound. “Sit down, my lord.” She nudged him into a chair, pressing the cloth to his head again. “We’ll hold this here for a few moments. Do close your eyes.”

His lip quirked. “Why?”

“I can see the pulse in your temple pounding. You must take deep breaths and calm yourself.”

“Must I?” he asked, lifting a corner of his mouth in a half-smile. “I find that difficult to do when I’m around you, Jane.”

Five Stars!

Lady Jane is in desperate need of 1,000 pounds to pay off her son’s gambling debt. But how can she come up with the money without attracting attention to her precarious situation? The answer stares her straight in the face when she stumbles upon a painting Shaldon, the Spy Lord, covets to reap revenge on an old enemy. Can she get away with stealing a prized possession from Shaldon or will she become his next target for revenge when he discovers it and her gone?

Shaldon wants Lady Jane under his roof and in his bed. Her independent spirit awakens emotions dormant for many years. When she and his painting disappear, he believes his old rival, the Duque, has captured them both. He does some digging and realizes Lady Jane is right under his nose. But why would she need to steal it? The more he uncovers, the more his true feelings for her surface. He loves her. His new mission: to prove to her he’s a changed man. Can he leave his past life behind and forge a new future with Lady Jane?

What a beautiful mature romance by one of my favourite Regency romance authors. Not only does this include an older couple, both past their prime (according to the Ton), but the children of both Jane and Shaldon help to bring these two together.

The best part, for me, is the bantering between Lady Jane and Shaldon. She certainly keeps him on his toes and with one look, one touch, he unleashes passion in her she never knew existed. They hold tight to their secrets, afraid to reveal them, but when both of their lives are at stake, they’ll have no choice but to succumb to the love they share.

There’s plenty of action, spy intrigue and suspense. There’s even a duel with a surprise participant. I whipped through the pages as fast as possible because I simply needed to know what happened next.

This is book five in the Sons of the Spy Lord series yet it can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read the other books in the series and I didn’t have any trouble understanding what was going on and the multitude of characters.

If you’re looking for a romantic suspense set in the Regency era, pick this up today. If you’re looking for a historical romance with a mature couple, you’ll love Avenging the Earl’s Lady.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC from the author in the hopes I'd review it.

Favorite Character/Quote: Lady Jane. From the first page, I connected with her spirit and fortitude. She’s gone through so much and has a right to hate Shaldon yet she can’t help but fall in love with him. Her strength lies in her love for both her son and for Shaldon. She’s his equal in every way and I loved every minute of her story.

Freedom!

Vowing she’ll never submit to an arranged marriage, an earl’s daughter bolts for the remote seaside cottage that should be hers upon marriage.

But instead of a quiet respite from her controlling family, she finds her refuge occupied by the last man she ever wants to see again—an American artist, who’s also a thief.

And quite possibly one of her father’s spies.

Excerpt:

Perry stood at the mullioned French doors looking out over a narrow-tiled terrace. In the distance, a boat, as tiny as a beetle on the top of a pond, bobbed on a sea that roiled like her heart. Next to her, Jenny’s mouth had dropped open.

“Are you wondering what you’ve got yourself into?” Perry whispered.

“You did promise an adventure, miss.” She put the tip of one gloved finger on the pristine window. “But I’ll not go out there on any boat, no matter.”

Perry grinned through trembling lips. Nor would she, if she could help it.

“No? In for a penny, in for a pound.” She took a breath and another fragrance came to her, the scent of her mother’s preserved rooms at Cransdall. Her father had not bothered looking for a new countess to occupy them, thank God.

“It’s spotless. They must have a girl come up from the village to clean,” Jenny whispered and pointed. “Except for the mess over there.”

Empty dishes and a glass rested on a pretty oval table. Nearby, a dark shawl, much like the ones her mother had favored, draped over the back of a sofa.

Perry stood taller. “The house is not let. No one should be here but me. I have a right.”

“But no key, miss?” Jenny arched a brow.

The sound of a footstep drew their gaze to the drawing room door. A man stood in the shadow, tall, with dark hair longer than what was fashionable. Dim light caught the white of his linens. He was naked of coats.

The clacking in her chest beat all the way to her ears. Inside her pocket was a pistol, not primed, not cocked, and no doubt far too wet to fire.

He stepped through the door, into the gray light from the windows, and her heart all but stopped.

Fox was here. Fox, the artist. Fox, the scoundrel. Fox, the thief.

Four Stars for Excellence!

Lady Perpetua, Perry to her friends, and the daughter and of the infamous spy lord, Earl Shaldon, has bolted. Unwilling to be forced into marriage, she flees to the rugged Yorkshire coast to Gorse Cottage hoping to hide away there. Unfortunately, the cottage is already inhabited by the handsome and utterly annoying American painter, Mr. Fox. He and Perry have history. She has had a crush on him since she was a girl, and he has teased her and shunned her mercilessly. Now, it appears that the annoying Mr. Fox is more than he seems. Could he be one of her father’s spies? Moreover, what is he doing at Gorse Cottage, an estate she will inherit upon her marriage? As bodies pile up and layers of secrets are peeled back only to reveal more secrets, Perry and Fox are drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse. The prize: learning the truth behind the tragic death of Perry’s mother, but will they live long enough to tell the tale?

“The Counterfeit Lady” takes readers on a rollercoaster ride of adventure, action and intrigue. Lovers of spy and Regency novels will love Ms. Field’s skillful weaving of the two genres. Wonderfully drawn characters abound, from the many lively minor characters to the stiffly handsome and honorable Fox, always fighting his feelings, to Perry’s headstrong, slightly naïve runaway determined to live on her own terms. Along with the bright characters, the action is well plotted and will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Readers may be confused at first because, being the fourth book in the series, much of the backstory is only briefly alluded to, but that flaw is overbalanced as the story and characters draw readers into this rollicking tale of intrigue and love.

Excerpt:

When the Ladies Society for the Improvement of Village Life gathered, discussions could drag on.

Mrs. Myra Smith stood at a distance, watching the exhalation of so much talk fog the air in the unheated assembly rooms of the Royal George Inn. From her station near the door, she kept an eye on the boy who’d marched off to the far end of the room, away from the ladies.

The Society’s grandiose title always made Myra smile. Stuffy-sounding though it might be, the Ladies’ Society did have a valuable purpose. Village life could be dull, and didn’t she know that well.

It could also be closed-minded, a trap Myra was always dodging. She was here today representing Longview, the nearby children’s home that had brought so many interesting characters to Upper Upton—the teachers, ladies of questionable background like herself, and the children, London’s outcasts, who’d found shelter, and training, and love.

Longview had been generously endowed by the Lords Cathmore, Hackwell, and Wallingford, much as their lordships had endowed this whole village, trying to make the residents of Longview more palatable to the good citizens of Upper Upton. Even this inn had been thoroughly modernized and expanded. Their lordships had even plucked the handsome innkeeper from among their former military comrades.

Thoughts of the man reminded her, she and Barty should be on their way. “The room is quite adequate to your needs,” Myra said. “The children and I shall certainly see to—”

The door to the assembly rooms whooshed open, silencing her.

A wide smile flashed her way, and she caught her breath. “Mr. Grant,” she said with a clipped curtsy, remembering what she was dealing with.

True to his nature, Alexander Grant turned that handsome gaze on the other three ladies and bowed all around. “Such loveliness brightens the dreary aspects of this day.”

His grin widened, and his dark hair sparkled in the light from a tall window. The cold February rain had dampened his coats and breeches and ruddied his cheeks under the dark stubble. Warmth rose in Myra. She shook herself, searching for words.

London, 1821

His lady had not made an appearance tonight, not that he’d have any reason to expect her at a Kingsley soirée.

Charles Rupert Armstrong Everly took a long drag upon his cigarillo and surveyed the shadowed tangles of the garden.

Lady Kingsley had failed to place inviting lanterns outside to lure ball-goers into wickedness. And in all the preparations for the Kingsleys’ grand party, no servant had been sent to sweep away dead leaves from the previous autumn, or chase away whatever vermin were rustling around in them.

Of course, Lady Kingsley had also discouragingly locked the ballroom’s terrace doors.

He and his old school chum, Quentin Penderbrook, had required little more than a minor diversion and their wits to manage the Kingsley servants and the flimsy terrace door lock.

“Kingsley is pockets to let, I hear,” Penderbrook said. “Wonder how he financed this grand display?” He took a long drag. “The heiress, I suppose. As my aunt used to say, you need money to draw in the grand mark.”

“Your aunt was a font of wisdom.”

Penderbrook laughed. “Outspoken, she was, for a clergyman’s wife. It’s a pity I don’t have a title. I wonder if my chance of a position in the Home Office would suffice for the Kingsleys? From what I saw, the girl looks to be a beauty.”

Charley tapped off a bit of ash. “She looks to be a handful.”

His friend laughed. “You didn’t see her up close, as I did, Everly.”

That was true enough. They’d been dragged off to this ball by his sister, Lady Perpetua Everly, and had arrived blessedly late. From the crowded distance of the ballroom floor, the heiress’s back bore the usual outline of white muslin and piled up hair. “I’m speaking from general principles. Spanish women.”

“Ah. Spanish women. Well, you would know.”

He would, and he did. He was looking for a Spanish woman, wealthy and beautiful. He had tracked down more than a few in this pre-coronation social whirl.

“She’ll be miserable if he throws her to that slimy fish,” Penderbrook said.

The door clicked behind them and a lady appeared, the light behind her shadowing her face. Nothing, however—not the furbelows and flounces on her white dress, not the dim light—nothing could hide that figure.

Speech failed him—as it never did. He dropped his tobacco and bowed, his eyes traveling over her, down and up. She was exquisite.

She cast a trembling glance back, and he caught his breath, tasting the fear rolling off her.

A ray of light from the ballroom flashed in her eyes as they widened.

Before he could even stutter, she put a finger to her lips and disappeared down the crumbled stairs to the brush below, as quick and as wispy as a water wraith, albeit a curvy one.

“It’s good to see the old girl in this room,” the lady said.

“I beg your pardon?”

She pointed at the torchiere.

“Oh. You mean St. Lucy.”

“Pah, she never had a name. Go and light the candles. I’d say to ring for a maid but they’re a bunch of fools. Your servants let you down girl.”

“They’re a tad superstitious. They shall be along presently.” Katie fetched a paper spill from the mantel, lit it, and carried the fire to St. Lucy’s crown.

It’s good to see the old girl in this room. Leo’s relative had been in this house before. Perhaps she was acquainted with the family who’d owned it, though that would have been years and years ago. Leo’s parents had bought it for his future residence when he was but a boy, and the locals said the elderly man who’d sold it had rarely been in residence. But perhaps this lady had visited in her childhood. Perhaps she could tell the ghost story after Father left.

One by one, Katie lit the five candles that rose from the laurel-wreathed “cake plate,” the flames flickering and rising, sending beams into the corners, making shadows dance and dust motes gleam like the tiniest of fairies. The old house came alive in the night, the draperies breathing in and out, the shadowed red walls shimmering like waves.

The house creaked and moaned and whispered its memories, and a thrill rippled down Katie’s spine, as it had when Mama tucked her in with a good ghost story.

And just as then, the warm candlelight flowed around her and through her, and she felt nothing of fear. Nay, in the last quarter hour, all of her niggling fears had lifted away.

It was good to share worries.

The door latch rattled, and Richard strode in, arms loaded with a sloshing tureen. Behind him came a line of servants carrying trays.

Her heart swelled. Her servants had not let her down after all. “You see, ma’am.” Katie waved a hand at the line of servants and turned back to the woman and…

The lady was gone.
